During IWA Wastewater, Water and Resource Recovery Conference held in Poznań on 10-13.04.2022 our teams presented two poster presentations. Conducted studies are closely linked to the topic of the project and their results may help to achieve main goals of the SNIT project.
Bartosz Zięba from Wrocław University of Science and Technology team presented results of the research Substrate affinity in a complex activated sludge biocenosis, which focused oninteractions between nitrifiers originating from reactors with substantially different operation conditions. Bioaugmentation, which may be used in the project research as the supplementary action, is process where external biomass is subjected to the reactor where process condition in most cases vary significantly from the ones of its source. Therefore, apart from aspects associated with abrupt change of environment conditions, inevitable during this process, knowledge of population dynamics between groups characterized by completely different kinetic parameters has to be evaluated.
The obtained results show that resultant substrate affinity for nitrifiers can be calculated as weighted mean for affinity of mixture components. This information enables rather easy assessment of the bioaugmentation efficiency before introduction of the process and can be used as vital tool during future research.
